Chapter 4: Digital health technologies in clinical investigations

This chapter will help you explore how leveraging telemedicine, wearable technologies, and digital platforms can help you reach underserved populations, collect richer data, streamline data collection, and drive meaningful improvements in pediatric care.

Who uses pediatric DHTs?

The pediatric health system contains many stakeholders and ‘users’ of DHTs. The four types of users considered for this playbook include:

Patients utilize DHTs to manage their personal health and well-being. This may include tracking health metrics, accessing mental health services, receiving reminders for medications, or monitoring chronic conditions through apps and wearable devices. DHTs should empower patients to take an active role in their healthcare. Young patients rely on caregivers to make healthcare decisions and are progressively empowered to manage their personal health as they age.

Caregivers use DHTs to support in the healthcare management of their child or dependent. This may include monitoring vital signs, managing medication schedules, coordinating appointments, and communicating with healthcare providers, and more.

Clinicians and healthcare professionals (HCPs) use electronic health records (EHRs), telemedicine platforms, remote monitoring tools, and other digital solutions to diagnose, treat, and follow up with patients, ensuring efficient and data-driven healthcare delivery. HCPs are at the center of DHT administration – identifying the appropriate tools and resources to support their patients. (Includes doctors, nurses, therapists, school and community-based professionals.)

Pharmaceutical and clinical research organizations leverage digital health technologies—such as data analytics platforms, remote trial monitoring systems, digital biomarkers, and electronic clinical trial management tools—to accelerate drug development, optimize clinical trials, and generate real-world evidence that drives innovative, data-driven therapeutic research and regulatory decisions (includes pharmaceutical companies and contract research organizations).

Explore chapter sections

Recruitment and consent

Decentralized trials offer innovative ways to improve patient representation by reaching more diverse populations. Use this section to learn:

  • How DHTs can facilitate accessible recruitment
  • Considerations for obtaining consent and assent
  • How to navigate safety, privacy, and life stage transitions

Measurement

The complexity of child development makes consistent and accurate measurement difficult. Use this section to understand how DHTs can:

  • Enable reliable, robust, and consistent measurements
  • Assess meaningful aspects of health, adapt to patient needs, and deliver more meaningful data

Data collection

Streamlined, adaptive data collection is critical in pediatric research. Use this section to understand:

  • How DHTs can be tailored to children’s needs to ensure data is collected efficiently
  • The benefits of continuous, real-time monitoring to reduce burden on participants and families

Leveraging data

A bidirectional relationship exists between between real world data and DHTs in pediatric clinical research. Use this section to explore:

  • Utilization of real-world data in pediatric research to inform clinical practices and enhance trial design
