Expanding the toolkit – innovative ways for health systems to achieve their goals with virtual first care (V1C)

Abby Sugg, Associate Director, Digital Medicine Society

We often discuss V1C as an innovative approach to meeting patients where they are with more flexible and convenient care options supporting their lifestyles and health conditions. However, like the patients they serve, healthcare systems vary greatly in size and scope and have many reasons and avenues for implementing innovative solutions.

V1C is flexible and includes an array of components that can be tailored to fit the unique needs of any health system, regardless of its most pressing challenges. From optimizing revenue strategies to enhancing patient experience, V1C offers versatile applications that can drive significant improvements across the board.

Optimize revenue strategies

One of the primary advantages of V1C is its potential to optimize revenue strategies for health systems. By shifting routine and lower-reimbursed services such as remote patient monitoring (RPM) and chronic care management (CCM) to virtual platforms, health systems can free up in-house resources for higher-revenue procedures. This not only maximizes profitability but also allows clinicians to operate at the top of their license, focusing on more complex and economically valuable tasks.

Strengthen networks & partnerships

By ensuring that patients receive comprehensive care within the network, virtual care reduces out-of-network leakage and enhances patient retention, strengthening healthcare networks and partnerships. This integrated approach facilitates seamless collaboration with specialists, labs, and pharmacies, ensuring continuity of care and improving overall patient satisfaction.

Resource optimization

Efficient resource utilization is another significant benefit of V1C. Virtual care platforms can handle routine follow-ups, patient communication, monitoring, and coaching, alleviating the time burden on clinicians and allowing for more efficient scheduling. This scalability means that health systems can quickly expand services to meet demand without significant investment in physical infrastructure, ultimately reducing costs and improving operational efficiency.

Enhancing accessibility & patient experience

V1C services ensure timely access to care, personalized treatment plans, and continuous patient engagement. This approach improves adherence to treatment plans and reduces the incidence of hospital readmissions, leading to better health outcomes. By providing regular virtual check-ins and using digital health tools for monitoring, V1C ensures that patients receive continuous support and timely interventions from preventive health, on-demand services, and seamless care transitions for a truly patient-centered experience no matter where patients are in their care journey.

Population health management

Finally, V1C is a vital tool for population health management. It enables continuous monitoring, early intervention, and improved health outcomes for large patient groups. For example, managing chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension through remote monitoring allows for timely interventions and preventive care measures. This proactive approach reduces hospital readmissions, improves patient adherence to treatment plans, and addresses social determinants of health by collaborating with local community organizations.

Conclusion

Implementing V1C is not just a technological advancement; it’s a strategic necessity for health systems aiming to optimize revenue, strengthen networks, and improve patient outcomes. By embracing V1C, health systems can navigate the complexities of modern healthcare, ensuring that they provide high-quality, accessible, and efficient care for every patient in their network. We encourage health system leaders to explore the potential of V1C and consider how it can transform their operations and patient care strategies.

Together, we can lead the way in digital health innovation, creating a more resilient and patient-centered healthcare system.
