DiMe Glossary

Defining reference measure

Objective measure that emerges when a physiologic process or behavioral construct depends on the technology used to capture it to such an extent that it sets the medical definition for that process or construct.

For instance, the medical definition of sleep is based on the electrical activity of the brain, eyes, and muscles; polysomnography is the defining reference measure for sleep as described by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Manual for the Scoring of Sleep and Associated Events.
