Chapter 1: Market dynamics & sustainable business opportunities in pediatric digital health

This chapter of The Playbook will help you explore the landscape of pediatric DHTs and the transformative potential they can have on research and care. It addresses critical challenges, strategies for sustainable innovation, and pathways to help you drive growth and impact in children’s healthcare.

Who uses pediatric DHTs?

The pediatric health system contains many stakeholders and ‘users’ of DHTs. The four types of users considered for this playbook include:

Patients utilize DHTs to manage their personal health and well-being. This may include tracking health metrics, accessing mental health services, receiving reminders for medications, or monitoring chronic conditions through apps and wearable devices. DHTs should empower patients to take an active role in their healthcare. Young patients rely on caregivers to make healthcare decisions and are progressively empowered to manage their personal health as they age.

Caregivers use DHTs to support in the healthcare management of their child or dependent. This may include monitoring vital signs, managing medication schedules, coordinating appointments, and communicating with healthcare providers, and more.

Clinicians and healthcare professionals (HCPs) use electronic health records (EHRs), telemedicine platforms, remote monitoring tools, and other digital solutions to diagnose, treat, and follow up with patients, ensuring efficient and data-driven healthcare delivery. HCPs are at the center of DHT administration – identifying the appropriate tools and resources to support their patients. (Includes doctors, nurses, therapists, school and community-based professionals.)

Pharmaceutical and clinical research organizations leverage digital health technologies—such as data analytics platforms, remote trial monitoring systems, digital biomarkers, and electronic clinical trial management tools—to accelerate drug development, optimize clinical trials, and generate real-world evidence that drives innovative, data-driven therapeutic research and regulatory decisions (includes pharmaceutical companies and contract research organizations).

Explore chapter sections

The critical moment for pediatrics and digital health

This section highlights the growing prevalence of chronic conditions in children and the opportunity for DHTs to deliver personalized, preventative, and data-driven care, unlocking long-term value and improved health outcomes.

Navigate the road to growth and impact

This section addresses barriers such as fragmented care systems, regulatory complexity, and the “budget dust” perception, providing strategies for you to overcome these challenges and create a seamless ecosystem for pediatric DHT adoption.

Strategies for sustainable pediatric digital health innovation

This section highlights wearables, telehealth, and AI to advance preventative care, chronic disease management, and mental health while prioritizing equity, collaboration, and evidence-based solutions.

Budget dust:

A relatively small portion of a total budgetoften overlooked or undervalued in larger financial planning or resource allocation. Child healthcare costs are described as “budget dust” because, despite children making up a significant portion of the population, the actual spending on their care represents a small fraction of overall healthcare expenditures.
